Louis in the Garden

Wow it's been a while. I won't drag on too much about the past few months but I'll be making more posts soon, I'm sure. I've been staying busy, just not so bloggery. Here's my latest self-assigned editorial portrait. Louis CK is one of my favorite comedians and so I'd thought I'd thank him for the laughs with this not so flattering depiction of him as Adam in the Garden of Eden. The concept was inspired by his album Shameless. As shame was a symptom of eating the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge, I thought the setting would be appropriate. I hope it gives you laugh.

Zombie Vision: A look at the human brain

So in continuation of my series on anatomy and organ systems, I've come to the brain (with little emphasis on the rest of nervous system, i.e. the spinal chord, etc). I chose as my model the holder of one of my favorite brain,  Leonardo Da Vinci, whom I remain indebted to both as an artist and enthusiast of anatomy. I've always been captivated by the self-portrait from which this was drawn and enjoyed discovering all the subtle lines and wrinkles hidden below the damaged surface of the aged parchment. And sure, this may be standing on the shoulders of a giant, but I don't think he minds being a few inches taller.

I'm not sure what will be next, whether I'll take a break from the series to work on other ideas, or continue on. I'm excited about doing the circulatory system though, so that will probably be the next in line for the anatomy series. I'm also working on cartooning now. As it's not something I generally do on a professional level, but more as a way to past idle time, I'd like to see where it takes me when I consider it more seriously. And hopefully it will also inspire me to include more humor in my work, as that's something I've been neglecting for too long now. We'll just have to see.

...and exhale.

Respiratory System   12ish x 20ish

So I'm working at an art supply store now, which is great for my bank account, but leaves less time to read and paint. Oh well. I finished this last week and hope to have the next finished within a few days. 'So what's next', you might ask. Well, you'll just have to think about it.

L'anatomie

Perhaps the first of a new series all about your bodily systems. I've been meaning to explore inforgraphics for a while now, so I thought this would be a good place to start. Next is respiratory.

My computer has died, but it will never rot.

As the title of this post suggests, my computer is dead, at least until I can hire a witch doctor. But here's a couple that I've just finished up. A couple more should be on their way shortly. The first is a continuation of the fungal series, and the second was commissioned for an online journal of a friend (I'll post a link to the article once it's up).

The Night America Trembled

As I'm sure everyone knows, this October 30th marks the 72nd anniversary of Orsen Welles's radio broadcast of War of the Worlds. The screenplay was written by Howard Koch, who went on to write the screenplay for Casablanca. But the genius of it was all Orsen's. If you haven't experienced it, I highly recommend listening to a recording. If you have heard it, but want to know more, there are a few documentaries about it, most of them on youtube and the like. "The Night America Trembled" from 1958 includes some great dramatizations and was what originally inspired me to do an illustration on the subject, so I recommend it as a start. Happy Halloween, and as HG Wells would say, Beware of germs, they may wipe out your species.
